African Anthropology Seminar with Richard Dimba Kiaka

18. oktober, kl. 14:15-16:00
University of Oslo
Blindern, Eilert Sundts hus

Richard Dimba Kiaka, Research Associate of the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Universität Hamburg, will deliver the lecture “Contesting the Elephant: Community-Based Conservation and Environmental Justice in Namibia”.

Natural resource management in rural, arid Namibia has profoundly changed since the early 1990s. After independence, and in accordance with global environmental policies, responsibility for managing communal land, game, and water was transferred to local users through formalised associations. Kiaka uses the concept of environmental justice as a theoretical guide to explore the combined effects that these new water, land, and wildlife policies have had on issues of equity.

The seminar is open to all, including bachelor and master students. No registration is required. After the seminar, drinks and snacks will be served in our lunchroom.

Place: Eilert Sundts hus, 6th Floor, Room 648.
